Welcome to September, San Diego. The end of summer brings concerts, festivals + outdoor movies to our city, while the start of fall ushers in Oktoberfest celebrations, pumpkin picking, and spooky attractions.
We’re ready for these fun, local events — though we’re not ditching the flip-flops for boots just yet. 🩴

Weather
- 82º | Sunshine with patchy clouds | 0% chance of rain
- This heat wave is relentless — and we haven’t even hit the hottest days yet. The National Weather Service San Diego says the heat will peak on Sun., Sept. 4 + Mon., Sept. 5, with highs topping out 10-18º above normal seasonal temps. Find a local Cool Zone. 🌡️ (National Weather Service)
- You know the drill: scorching heat creates elevated fire risk, so county emergency officials have put together these safety tips. You should clear brush around your home, but avoid using power tools, as they can spark a wildfire. For the same reason, never pull your car over in grass. 🔥
Sunrise + Sunset
- Rise: 6:23 a.m.
- Set: 7:13 p.m.
Tide
- Low: 6:26 a.m. + 7:57 p.m.
- High: 12:42 a.m. + 1 p.m.
Civic
- The County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a plan to develop a behavioral health facility at Alvarado Hospital near San Diego’s College Area — set to open by late 2023. The plan will create 44 new acute inpatient beds and medical units that provide mental health + addiction treatment services. 🏥 (Times of San Diego)
- The Department of Homeless Solutions and Equitable Communities — a county group formed last summer — gave an update on its first-year progress. The department said it secured $30 million to address homelessness, provided housing options for 4,400+ people, and took part in hundreds of community outreach events. 🤝
- Chula Vista closed Harborside Park yesterday for a minimum of 90 days due to an increase in homeless activity. During the closure, the city says it’ll increase community outreach with 12 nonprofit and agency partners to provide information on housing, detox + social services — and assess the park’s future. 🌳
Health
- The City of San Diego issued a precautionary advisory for Dog Beach at the San Diego River Outlet in Ocean Beach due to a sewage spill. Swimmers, surfers + pets are urged to avoid contact with the water until tests confirm it is safe — tomorrow at the earliest. Check for updates before you get in. 🏊
Edu
- Campus Pride Index — which assesses LGBTQ-friendly colleges and universities nationwide — ranked San Diego State University among the 40 “Best of the Best.” The university earned a five-star score for its LGBTQ+ programs, practices, and policies that foster an inclusive environment for all students. 🏳️🌈 (SDSU NewsCenter)
Feel Good
- We herd the best news: San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s 4-year-old African elephant, Mkaya, is responding well to treatment after specialists detected the presence of endotheliotropic herpesvirus earlier this month. Wildlife care teams are keeping a close eye on her and expect a full recovery. 🐘
Arts
- The New Children’s Museum will debut the second phase of its sensory-friendly installation, “Breathing Room,” on Sat., Sept. 10. Created by Oceanside-based artist Michelle Montjoy, it’s designed as a calm zone amid the interactive museum. Additions include a piece called “Hugs” — oversized, stuffed sweater forms with weighted arms that offer an embrace. 💞
Drink
- According to Yelp, the best horchata in California is made at Barrio Donas at 4714 Clairemont Blvd. The shop is known for its delectable donuts, but don’t sleep on the brand’s traditional drink made with rice, vanilla, cinnamon + sugar. Barrio Donas makes specialty horchatas, too. 🥤 (Fox 5)
Outdoors
- Lake Poway will host two out of this world campouts on Fri., Sept. 9 + Fri., Oct. 7. The events include a presentation from a Solar System Ambassador, a space-themed snack, and cosmic-inspired crafting. It costs $26 per car and requires registration. 🪐

San Diego State University Aztecs football season kicks off this Sat., Sept. 3, at Snapdragon Stadium. 🏈
You already know how pumped we are about the brand-new sports hub in Mission Valley. Now, let’s take a time-out to toast to NOVA Kombucha — named the official hard kombucha of Snapdragon Stadium.

The Chula Vista-based brand — which hails from Tiago Carneiro, owner of Novo Brazil Brewing Co. — has two bars inside the venue. The flagship spot is on the top level of The Sycuan Piers at the south end above Sections 118-120, and the other is on the east concourse behind Sections 103-105. 📍
If you’re looking for a taste outside the stadium, NOVA has a taproom on Newport Avenue in Ocean Beach. It can also be found at the Novo Brazil Taproom on Lane Avenue in Chula Vista + the Novo Brazil Restaurant at Otay Ranch Mall. Another taproom will debut soon in Imperial Beach.

Editor’s pick: It’s going to be a scorcher this holiday weekend, so the coast is calling. We have so many beautiful beaches at our fingertips (toetips?), it shouldn’t be hard to find one to visit this weekend. ☀️
Just remember, get there bright and early to snag the two most important things: a parking spot + your spot on the sand. Have a safe + happy long weekend. ⛱️
