Class is in session: The first day of school is coming up — Mon., Aug. 29, in San Diego Unified School District. For some families, this season can bring insecurities. So, we’re rounding up local organizations that help students supply their school year + letting you know how you can help sharpen their minds and pencils.

🚌 Stuff the Bus
San Diego County Office of Education + San Diego County Credit Union are challenging locals to stuff the bus and help students experiencing homelessness receive backpacks filled with supplies. The organizations are asking for monetary donations — online or at Ralphs + Food 4 Less stores — through Wed., Aug. 31. Any amount helps, but $20 fills a backpack for an elementary student or $25 for a secondary-age student.
🎒 Food 4 Kids Backpack Program
Some students face food insecurity when they’re outside school. The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank provides elementary school students with nutritious items when they head home for the weekend, but relies on donations to fuel the program.
🖍️ San Diego Center for Children Back-to-School Drive
This organization is helping with back to school shopping — because it’s challenging locals to supply students' success when money is a concern. You can make monetary donations, collect in-demand supplies, or make wishes come true by shopping Amazon + Walmart wish lists, with the goal of being ready for the school year by Fri., Aug. 26.

🍎 San Diego Mesa College Foundation
Back to school season can impact post-secondary students too. San Diego Mesa College collects supplies year-round to help with basic needs like food, clothing, and toiletries, or you can make a financial donation to help the areas most in-need. ✂️ UWSD Back to School Drive
United Way of San Diego County is collecting funding + classroom supplies to erase financial insecurities and close gaps in educational inequalities. You can support the organization with a monetary donation, or by sending items directly to the organization through Mon., Aug. 15.
✏️ School Supply Kit Assembly
If you’d like to give some time, SupplyBank.org needs volunteers to help prepare thousands of school supply kits for homeless + low-income students in Southern California. Sign up for a time slot tomorrow at the San Diego Convention Center for the opportunity to pack a student’s school year with positivity.

When in Slam Diego, do as the Padres do. Three new Friars debuted in Wednesday’s game, including slugger Juan Soto, but third baseman Brandon Drury was the real hit. The former Cincinnati Red hit a grand slam on the first pitch he ever saw as a Padre, helping the team beat the Colorado Rockies 9-1. ⚾ (CBS Sports)

The San Diego Sockers' future home has a name: Frontwave Arena. The 170,000-sqft Oceanside venue will have capacity to kick it with 6,000 sports fans or 7,600 concert goers and is scheduled to open in late 2023. The name results from a partnership between Oside Arena Management + Frontwave Credit Union. ⚽ (Times of San Diego)

The Westfield UTC is preparing for a Nordstrom wreck as the former home of the department store is being razed for a new project, with demolition beginning later this month. The next project has not yet been revealed, but a representative hinted at “non-traditional mall offerings” coming in the future. 🏗️ (San Diego Union-Tribune)

Editor’s pick: Happy Friday, San Diego. This was such an exciting week to be a Padres fan, thanks to the acquisition of Juan Soto + other all-stars.
We’ve got a very California-themed stretch of baseball ahead of us. The series against the Los Angeles Dodgers begins tonight — then we head directly into the series against the San Francisco Giants. The best way to say you’re a San Diego fan without really saying it? With a locally-named beer, of course. 🍻
